Tax Planning and Advisory
Tax planning happens during the year. By the time the return is being prepared, the decisions that mattered have already been made. This is the work of making them deliberately.
What we do
What This Covers
Planning and setting aside, not preparation. Kathryn does not prepare or file returns, and works alongside whoever does.
Tax set aside as part of every allocation, so the money is there when the bill arrives
Decisions reviewed through the year while they can still be changed
Records kept so your preparer is not reconstructing the year from receipts
Books closed and reconciled ahead of filing season rather than during it
Questions from your CPA or EA answered directly, from the ledger
Estimated payment timing planned against actual cash position
Good fit if
The tax bill is a surprise every spring
You scramble to get records to your preparer in March
Money set aside for tax keeps getting spent on something else
You want to understand the bill before it arrives
Our Approach
How It Works
Step 1
Free consultation
A short call about how tax has gone in previous years and who currently prepares your return.
Step 2
Set the reserve
A tax percentage set against your real numbers and moved aside on every deposit.
Step 3
Through the year
Position reviewed as the year goes, so decisions get made while they still count.
Step 4
Hand-off
Books closed, reconciled and delivered to your preparer, with questions answered from the ledger.

Where we work
Available Across East Texas, Dallas and Orange County
The practice is remote, so the county you are in decides very little. These are the areas Kathryn works in most.
Do you prepare and file tax returns?
No. SmartAccounting Firm is a bookkeeping and advisory practice, and tax preparation is deliberately outside what we offer. Kathryn does the planning through the year and works alongside whoever files your returns.
Can you represent me in front of the IRS?
No. That requires credentials Kathryn does not hold and would not pretend to. If you need representation, she will tell you so plainly rather than taking the work.
I already have a CPA. Does this overlap?
It should not. Most preparers want clean books and a client who set money aside. This is the work that happens in the eleven months your preparer is not looking at your file.
