Let’s face it, most people don’t find accounting interesting. In fact, it’s usually the part of running a business most owners hate; be truthful–would you rather be making money or accounting for it? Yep. I thought so. Maybe it’s time you delegate this task to someone who enjoys it–and you can get back to doing what you love.
Here are three reasons why you should consider hiring a bookkeeper:
- You don’t have time to do it yourself. There are only 24 hours in a day, no matter how much you might wish otherwise. Do you really want to spend 5 hours in a day reconciling bank statements, recording bills, receiving payments (ok, that part is fun), or does it make more sense to hand that part over to someone who can get it done more efficiently, reporting back to you in real time so you always know where you stand? Sure, it’s an “extra” cost, but how many more sales could you have made in those hours you spent slogging away at your books?
- You’re not a subject-matter expert in bookkeeping. Likely you don’t attempt your own dentistry or surgery just to save a few bucks. If debits and credits are as confusing to you as brain surgery, you could be doing yourself more harm than good. The IRS won’t go away just because you put off the unpleasant aspects of accounting for your business.
- The process leaves you less than enthused. Seriously, bookkeeping is really boring for most people–it’s normal to feel that way; there’s a reason people call it bean counting. I bet you’d rather be reaching out to clients, growing your business, than printing out trial balances and income statements.
I know you want the data available to you so you can see how great you’re doing, but wouldn’t you rather have it show up in real time, like a gift to you? Although business isn’t always fun and games, slogging through tasks you hate makes it hard to stay motivated.
I completely understand the need to do it all yourself. I’m the same way. It may feel “smarter” to do it yourself–but is it more efficient? Mowing that acre with a push mower may be cheaper but if it means you put it off…and put it off…is it really better? At the end of the day, you need to make the most of your time, money and expertise.
